Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Tumulo do Cruzado (Crusder’s Tomb)
This church is said to have been built in the 13th century, when the city of Tavira was captured from the Moors by the Order of Knights of Santiago (1242). It was built by D. Paio Peres Correia to replace the existing Arab Mosque. Inside, near the main altar, rest the bones of seven Christian knights killed by the Moors and the remains of D. Paio Peres Correia. The Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, located inside the municipality of Portimão, are about to win a new tomb, baptised by archaeologists as Tomb 9. The restoration of this millenarian structure is almost complete, so that visitors can start to enjoy one more point of interest in that national monument.
