Castle of Silves

The earliest human occupation of the hill at Silves goes back to pre-historic times. In the first millennium BC Phoenician sailors penetrated the river Arade which remained navigable until the end of the middle ages. The Phoenician sailors later became aware of a Roman Presence and there is Archaeological evidence showing exploration of copper deposits. Some historians claim that they were responsible for the first fortifications between the 4th and 5th centuries that has also been attributed to the Visigoths that succeeded them.

Sé (Cathedral)

Sé de Silves is an old cathedral located in the city and parish of the same name (more precisely in Largo da Sé), in the district of Faro, Portugal. Mainly erected in the fifteenth century, the former Cathedral of Silves today has a predominantly gothic stamp, but also elements of other times, since it has undergone changes throughout the centuries. It is the most important Gothic building in Algarve and one of the main monuments of the south of the country. It was classified as a national monument on June 29, 1922.

Mercy Church (Igreja da Misericórdia)

The Misericórdia Church was built and offered to Queen Leonor by the King John II, in mid-sixteenth century. This gesture was result of the integration of Silves in the Queen’s House, which would then be used by Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy). From its original structure still remains the Manueline portal. The interior has a very simple nave, although it highlighting the interesting Mannerist style altarpiece of the main chapel and the central framework, which represents the Visitation dating from 1727/28.
